Spam represents both an enormous administrative nightmare and a costly productivity drain for virtually every enterprise, and IT organizations are under intense pressure from everyone from the CEO on down to do something about it. But spam is a particularly hard problem to solve. Determined spammers are continually inventing new techniques to circumvent the latest defenses, making it difficult to define spam, let alone block it. An emerging best-practice for combating spam is to employ a perimeter defense that applies a potent combination of antispam technologies to capture the maximum amount of spam with the minimum amount of false positives. FeaturesTumbleweed's antispam engine provides highly effective spam blocking and management capabilities, while easing the management burden associated with fighting the daily deluge of junk mail. Tumbleweeds Email Security products use a series of different spam engines, each of which contributes to the overall spam classification. The engines work together to provide an overall classification and level of confidence. ![]() Dynamic Antispam Service. Tumbleweed Proprietary Capture Nodes are responsible for identifying corporate spam and phishing outbreaks throughout the world. The capture nodes are focused on corporate email traffic (as opposed to ISP/consumer traffic). The Tumbleweed nodes are managed by our own Message Protection Lab (MPL) staffed with threat engineers 24x7x365. Filters are updated 12-14 times per day. Adaptive Image Filtering (AIF). This engine analyses the images contained within suspect messages, and performs “fuzzy matching” to determine whether they are similar to know spam images. This recently added engine is highly effective against the modern trend of image-only spam which contains random variations within the image.
Recurrent Pattern Detection (RPD). This engine focuses on detecting identifiable patterns in spam and virus attacks, rather than on lexical analysis of the contents of individual email messages. It is content-agnostic and can detect outbreaks in any language, format or encoding. Through proactively probing the Internet to gather information about massive outbreaks, we can recognize unique recurrent patterns in new spam, virus and phishing attacks within the first 1.5 minutes. Intent-Based Filtering (IBF). This represents a proactive AI-based approach to combating spam. IBF correctly interprets the intent of an email message by predicatively and evidentially analyzing the language used in a message. In other words, IBF understands both the meaning of the individual words and phrases themselves, the meaning of the context and structure in which those words and phrases are used, and the relationships between the various words and phrases used in that context.
