By looking at the sender IP-address, number of connection attempts, message volume, recipients, and other attributes across SMTP connections, MailGate Edge is able to identify network-level patterns consistent with email security threats and take appropriate defensive action. For example, DHAs generally come from one or a few IP addresses, and send a disproportionately high number of messages with invalid recipients. DoS attacks typically try to establish a very large number of connections, or send a very large number of messages over a small number of connections.

MailGate Edge runs on a simple-to-manage Linux-based appliance that is tuned for high-volume message transfer. This network--level approach provides significant security without the processing bottlenecks caused by content-centric email hygiene gateways, plug-ins, and filters. Organizations can easily scale MailGate Edge to handle large email volumes by deploying multiple MailGate Edge appliances using MX round-robin techniques or a load balancer.
