Tumbleweed Press Releases

Tumbleweed Teams with Commtouch to Add Outbreak Detection to Tumbleweed MailGate

Security Company Licenses RPD Technology from Commtouch, Expands Spam Prevention Capabilities

Mountain View, CA and Redwood City, CA – July 11, 2005 – Tumbleweed® Communications Corp. (NASDAQ:TMWD), a leading provider of email and file transfer security software and appliances, and Commtouch® Software Ltd. (NASDAQ: CTCH), the developer of RPD™ technology for real time anti-spam and Zero-Hour™ virus protection, today announced that Tumbleweed has licensed Commtouch’s RPD technology and certain elements of U.S. Patent No. 6,330,590 for inclusion in Tumbleweed’s email security products. Tumbleweed has integrated RPD (Recurrent Pattern Detection™) features into Tumbleweed MailGate Email Firewall and MailGate AntiSpam. The addition of this technology further extends MailGate performance by adding unique real-time detection capabilities, blocking spam outbreaks within minutes of their release into the Internet.

“Recurrent Pattern Detection adds outbreak detection as an additional layer of defense against spam, phishing, spyware, virus and worm attacks sent out in email blasts. It is a strong complement to our comprehensive email security offering,” said John Thielens, CTO of Tumbleweed Communications. “Outbreak Detection, combined with Tumbleweed’s other threat protection technology, ensures complete protection from increasingly nefarious email attacks.”

“As a leading provider of communication security solutions, Tumbleweed is a very important partner for Commtouch. This agreement is a significant milestone in our global OEM strategy,” said Gideon Mantel, Commtouch’s CEO. “It is additional evidence that only a technology with true global reach – that is equally effective against messages in any format or language – is the choice of best-of-breed security vendors such as Tumbleweed.”

About Recurrent Pattern Detection (RPD)
Spam, phishing, spyware, viruses, and worms are evolving at a frantic pace, and dangerous new spam/malware hybrids continue to emerge. Messages are continuously modified to stay far ahead of rule-based methods, and dynamically changing distribution sources (sender IPs) undermine reputation-based services. Rather than addressing individual messages, RPD technology detects the outbreaks themselves – and blocks all messages associated with them. The most significant advantage of this approach is that it overcomes one of the most pressing issues in the industry: response time to new threats. RPD detects outbreaks as soon as they emerge: the faster an outbreak proliferates, the faster it is identified. Messages associated with mass outbreaks are blocked immediately, with no need to analyze each message. The result is that users are protected in real-time, all the time. RPD is effective against any mailing that is mass-distributed over the Internet: malware, fraud and spam in any language or format.
