ARKANSAS CHILDRENS HOSPITAL IMPLEMENTS TUMBLEWEED'S EMAIL FIREWALL
Tumbleweed Email Firewall Reduces Spam Rates, IT Management Time and Network Bandwidth; Secures Outbound Messages for HIPAA Compliance Redwood City, CA – September 21, 2004 – Tumbleweed® Communications Corp. (NASDAQ:TMWD), a global leader in email security and secure data technologies, today announced that the Arkansas Children’s Hospital has selected and implemented Tumbleweed’s Email Firewall™ to safeguard its network resources and users, protect critical information, and dramatically reduce costs by protecting its inbound email communications from spam, viruses and other inbound email threats. Since going live with the Tumbleweed Email Firewall™, Arkansas Children's Hospital has reported a five-fold improvement over their previous spam solution. Arkansas Children’s Hospital supports 1,800 email users and processes 78,000 inbound and outbound email messages, on a weekly basis. Before adopting Tumbleweed’s solution, the hospital had been using multiple point products to manage its email security, which offered limited services and required heavy management time. When the hospital wanted to replace the defunct system with a single comprehensive secure Internet communications solution, administrators at Arkansas Children's Hospital began to look at different email management products, finding that most of them were not capable of meeting all the hospital’s email security requirements: anti-spam, anti-virus, content filtering, email relay, and encrypted messaging capabilities. The hospital reviewed the Tumbleweed Email Firewall™ and was struck by its impressive set of powerful and integrated capabilities. The hospital purchased the Tumbleweed Email Firewall™ to protect their inbound email and secure their outbound messages to comply with HIPAA regulations. “We are pleased that the Arkansas Children’s Hospital, has enjoyed such a dramatic reduction in unwanted email, while securing the hospital’s outbound messages to comply with HIPPA regulations, said Jeffrey Smith, Chairman and CEO of Tumbleweed. "It is important for such an organization to keep their focus on saving lives, not combating spam and electronic viruses. Given the sensitivity of health records and importance of HIPAA compliance, we believe the healthcare industry can benefit greatly from our solutions." Healthcare organizations must comply with HIPAA regulations for sending email containing Protected Health Information (PHI). Arkansas Children's Hospital needed to protect its outbound mail containing suspected PHI by automatically identifying email containing PHI and encrypting and securely delivering the message to the recipient. Spam-heavy inbound email was another big problem at Arkansas Children's Hospital, where a large volume of junk email was devouring bandwidth and server space, and increasing administrator and end-user time. “The Tumbleweed Email Firewall solved Arkansas Children's
Hospital’s email challenges,” said Mac Madkins,
Security Administrator for Arkansas Children's Hospital. “Since
we implemented the Tumbleweed Email Firewall, it has identified
over 1,000 outbound emails that contained PHI and has funneled
them through a secure email channel. In addition, the Tumbleweed
Email Firewall has slashed spam rates, reduced administrator
time, reduced network bandwidth and server loads, and has
significantly improved user productivity.” About Tumbleweed SAFE HARBOR STATEMENT Except for the historical information contained herein, the matters discussed in this press release may constitute forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially from those projected, particularly with respect to the features and performance of Tumbleweed’s Email Firewall solution.
