Leading Law Firm Lowenstein Sandler PC Chooses Tumbleweed's email Firewall To Fight Spam

Law Firm Adds Tumbleweed Dynamic Anti-spam Service™ to email Firewall for Integrated Spam Blocking, Virus Scanning and email Encryption

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - October 14, 2003 - Tumbleweed® Communications Corp. (NASDAQ:TMWD), a leading provider of mission-critical communication solutions for businesses and government agencies using the Internet, announced today that law firm Lowenstein Sandler PC has deployed Tumbleweed's Dynamic Anti-Spam Service™ (DAS) to their existing Tumbleweed email firewall infrastructure, resulting in a 90% reduction in spam.

Lowenstein Sandler PC is New Jersey's premier law firm, with more than 220 attorneys working out of 5 different offices in New Jersey and New York. They began looking for a spam service when evolving spammer techniques began to overload their IT infrastructure. By deploying Tumbleweed's Dynamic Anti-Spam Service to their existing email firewall infrastructure, they have been able to significantly reduce the volume of spam seen by their attorneys, without the risk of losing critical business messages from their clients.

"Spam represents approximately 25% of our total email volume during the week and rises to 70% during the weekend," said Todd Corham, Director of Informations Systems and Technology for Lowenstein Sandler."After we implemented Tumbleweed's Dynamic Anti-Spam Service, our attorneys told us they saw a marked reduction in the amount of spam received. As a service organization for the firm, the IT department is always striving to minimize the time that employees spend on issues like spam, and the DAS service helps us achieve that."

Corham went on to say that the firm has seen very little legitimate email filtered out."We quarantine an average of 3,000 emails per day," he reported. "With Tumbleweed's email firewall we have the option of reviewing emails that were diverted to our quarantine queue to eliminate the possibility of lost email communications."
"Fighting Spam continues to be a problem as firms face the legal liability, network congestion, productivity issues, and cost implications of managing spam, said Dave Jevans, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Tumbleweed Communications. "Firms like Lowenstein Sandler are winning the spam battle by proactively installing our Dynamic Anti-Spam Service."

About Tumbleweed's Dynamic Anti-Spam Service:
The Tumbleweed Dynamic Anti-spam Service (DAS) is rated as the top anti-spam software and appliance for large enterprises by Network World magazine, and the product is currently used to block over 32 million spam messages per day on behalf of our customers. DAS is an Internet-based subscription service that updates the Tumbleweed MMS email firewall with new heuristic defenses as they are published, similar to the way anti-virus engines work. The email firewall includes a highly effective Spam Analysis Engine, which automates the identification of spam using powerful heuristics-based analysis technology; typical customers see an immediate 90%+ capture rate with one-tenth of one percent false positive rate before tuning.

Tumbleweed's Message Protection Lab develops and publishes the heuristic updates: the Lab is staffed by experts who continually analyze spam to identify new spammer trends and tactics, and create and publish new heuristics to stop them. The Lab analyzes both spam and legitimate email gathered internationally and provided by enterprise customers, to ensure that the Dynamic Anti-spam Service minimizes false positives in a business environment.

About Tumbleweed's MMS Email Firewall:
The Tumbleweed MMS™email firewall is rated by Information Security Magazine as the #1 email firewall software for large enterprises, and is currently in use at over 400 of the largest, most demanding messaging infrastructures in the world. Tumbleweed MMS is an enterprise-class email firewall for protecting, filtering and securing email traffic at the Internet gateway. MMS manages the organization's mission-critical email stream with an integrated set of anti-spam, anti-virus, anti-hacker, content filtering, email relay, and encrypted messaging capabilities - minimizing email communications risks and reducing email management costs.

Organizations use MMS to protect their networks from hacker, virus and spam threats; comply with email regulations (SEC, NASD, HIPAA, GLB, FDA); enforce email communications and security policies; and securely communicate with customers, partners and suppliers. Tumbleweed MMS complements and works seamlessly with corporate email servers such as Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, Novell Groupwise and a variety of UNIX-based email servers. The product is available as both a software package for larger companies, or as an appliance that provides enterprise level protection and management capabilities to small and mid-sized companies.
